Maths

Here at Howard, we want children to enjoy maths and understand how it helps them in everyday life. Our aim is for every child to leave school feeling confident, independent and positive about their mathematical skills.

Our Maths lessons take children on a journey of small steps and use physical and pictorial representations to support children’s understanding of the concepts and ideas they are learning about. Students have lots of opportunities to practise key skills so they become secure in their learning and able to use maths in different situations.

Maths is taught every day in every year group, with lessons focussed on helping children to achieve the intended outcomes and aims of the National Curriculum. This helps children become fluent with numbers, explain their thinking and solve problems. They learn about number, measurement, shape, space and statistics in a clear and intentionally structured way, so that they can make connections between what they have learnt.

At the heart of mathematics teaching and learning at our school is the fundamental belief that all children can make progress and achieve in this subject.

At the bottom of this page, you can download and read a copy of our curriculum overview to find out more about what children are learning in each year group.

Supporting your child at home

Times Tables Rock Stars

To support your child(ren) at home, you can help them to rehearse the essential key knowledge and facts they will need. This includes learning their times tables. Each child in Year 2 and upwards has a log in for Times Tables Rock Stars and all children are working towards turning their ‘heatmap’ green.

Playing Games

Here’s a list of suggested resources, games and ideas you can use at home to help your child(ren) with their maths. Don’t worry, this won’t involve you having to teach them a thing – that’s our job. Just support them and let us know if they find something tricky.

  • Top Trumps – helps children to compare numbers
  • Snakes and Ladders – helps with counting, including basic addition and subtraction
  • Monopoly Junior – a version of the popular game, for children aged 5+
  • Quirkle – players earn points by matching tiles with the same colour or symbol
  • Nubble! – a more advanced game involving calculation, for children who want to practice their mental maths
  • Snap! – helps children to recognise numbers and find pairs with the same value
  • Snap 10! – children say “snap” when two cards in a row add to make 10.
  • Pairs – turn over cards face down and take it in turns to find two cards with the same value. This helps with number recognition and is a great memory game too.
  • Guess my card (10 questions) – one person has a playing card that the others can’t see. The other players take it in turn to ask “Yes or No” questions to work out what the secret card is.
