PSHE
PSHE
Our personal, social and health education (PSHE) curriculum brings together citizenship with personal well-being, relationships, economic well-being, and life education whilst promoting our school values. The learning is developed in an age-appropriate way, which enables our children to become healthy, independent, and responsible citizens. Children at Howard Community are encouraged to explore, clarify and if necessary, challenge their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights, and responsibilities.
Through clear and purposeful PSHE teaching, we strive to support our children to feel happy and secure in school. Furthermore, with the increased prevalence of mental illness in young people, we will teach our children to understand what mental health is and have a bank of strategies to support this. Overall, we want children to leave Howard feeling emotionally resilient with the confidence to challenge themselves.
It is taught as a discrete subject in every classroom, where we cover the important topics of:
- Relationships- where we explore the topics of Beginning and Belonging, My Emotions, Family and Friends and Anti-Bullying.
- Citizenship- Me and My world, Economic Well-Being, Working Together and Financial Capability.
- Healthy and Safer Lifestyles- My Body and Growing up, Keeping Safe, Healthy Lifestyles, Relationships and Sex Education, Managing Safety and Risks and Digital Lifestyles.
Additionally, our Wellbeing Curriculum sits alongside this. Each year group focuses on a different quality each year through a two-year cycle.
These are as follows:
- Nursery- Caring
- Reception – Kindness
- Year 1 and 2 – Calm and Friendship
- Year 3 and 4- Respect and Success
- Year 5 and 6- Determination and Brave
Opportunities also occur throughout the year for additional learning in this subject – such as internet Safety, delivered by the Two Johns and the Healthy Mind and Body project carried out in Year 5 and 6 in the Spring Term.
Next year we are also going to take part in Happy Minds where the children will be learning about the brain and growth mindset, celebrating each child’s unique character and strengths, gratitude as a habit, positive relationships and being resilient. More information will be coming out about this soon and the dedicated parent app that will be a part of this.
